Maksutov in 1941, on the eve of the German invasion. The grandson of the last Russian governor of Alaska, Dr. Maksutov was born into Russian nobility. After the Bolsheviks overthrew the Kerensky government in November, 1917, he relied upon his training and skills as an engineer to overcome his aristocratic roots and avoid the grim fate that befell many others. Dr. Maksutov’s innovation was the creation of a high quality, inexpensive, versatile optical system ideal for lunar, planetary, double-stars and deep sky observing. The Maksutov-Cassegrain design uses a combination of a primary mirror matched to a glass meniscus lens that has a reflecting surface on the inside that functions as a secondary mirror. The Mak provides a long focal length in a small package with virtually no chromatic or spherical aberration, or coma. The chief drawback of the Maksutov design is the sometimes lengthy amount of time that the telescope requires to reach thermal equilibrium and the tendency for dew formation on the correcting meniscus (a common problem with Maks and Schmidt-Cassegrains).
